Last April I discovered a small oath on the left side of my nostril that was nothing more than a pencil gummet. It was always painful and had skin on it.On August 23, I went to a dermatologist who advised a biopsy to prove what it really was. The biopsy severed the upper lobe of the painful area and painfully left my beak. It took two months for the biopsy to completely heal. How is the MOHS operation performed?
Your surgeon will remove the cancer-free skin layer one by one. This is how the procedure is performed.
- They begin by washing and applying local anesthesia to the affected area and then remove the visible layers of cancer one by one with fine surgical instruments. They also remove the skin around the tumor to obtain a cancer-free margin. This is typically less than 2 mm around the tumor.
- They draw a reference map of the tissue and process it. It usually takes an hour for the tissue to be created. The surgeon examines the area carefully to make sure there are no more cancer cells. More tissue is removed in case cancer is still present. The mapping method helps the medical professional remove only the cancer cells without damaging healthy tissue.
- Reconstruction: After the cancer has been removed, the patient should undergo reconstruction for the best cosmetic finish. The location and size of the wound will play a role in determining the best reconstruction technique. Small wounds may not require reconstruction – they usually heal automatically. Larger wounds may require stitches, while larger wounds require skin grafts or flaps.
