The time of year is approaching when everyone in the office is sniffing their nose. Virtually no amount of hand gel or avoiding communal kettles will prevent the common cold. Germs are extremely common.

When you have a cold, nasal congestion is one of the most annoying symptoms. Even if you are feeling better than usual and seem to be spending a good portion of your weekly budget on tissues, this may deter you.

Instead of endlessly emptying your mouth (probably wrongly), there are many ways to relieve nasal congestion that you can try.

According to Prevention magazine, there is a delicious way. The health website explains the tongue technique in a video. First press the tongue against the top of the mouth, then the forehead between the eyebrows; press for no more than 20 seconds, then press and release.

Says Amy Rushlow, editor-in-chief of Prevention magazine, “What you’re actually doing is rocking a bone called the ‘woomer bone’ back and forth, basically removing all the blockage.”

You can also tilt your head back and pinch your nose to hold your breath for as long as possible. Adjust your breathing as needed, and your sinuses will be clear again.

The brain recognizes that you’re not getting much air,” says Rushlow, “so the survival mechanism kicks in and your sinuses clear out, allowing you to float in the air.
