Creatine Kinase

This test will determine the quantity of creatine kinase (ck) blood. ck is a picture of a protein known as an enzyme. It is most common in your skeletal muscles and heart and least numerous in your brain. Skeletal muscles are muscles attached to your skeleton. They work with your bones to help you drive and give your hull strength and toughness. Cardiac muscle pumps blood to your heart.

There are three equivalent CK enzymes.

  • CK-MM, found primarily in skeletal muscle.
  • CK-MB, found primarily in cardiac muscle.
  • CK-BB, found primarily in brain tissue.

Small amounts of CK in the blood are normal. Depending on the agreement and value of CK, it may mean that there is skeletal muscle, heart or brain damage or disease.

Other names: CK, total CK, creatine phosphokinase, CPK

What is it used for?

The CK test is typically used to diagnose and predict muscle damage and disease. These diseases include.

  • Muscular dystrophy, a rare genetic disorder that causes impotence, breakdown, and loss of function of skeletal muscle. It occurs primarily in males.
  • Labdomyolysis, a sudden fissure of muscle tissue. It can be caused by serious injury, muscular disease, or other excitement.

This test can be used to diagnose heart attacks, but not often enough; the CK test used to be the usual test for heart attacks. However, another test called troponin seems to better track heart damage.

Why is the CK test necessary?

A CK test is necessary if there are signs of muscle disease. These include

  • Muscle pain or cramping
  • Muscle weakness
  • Balance
  • Numbness or tingling.

You may also need this test if you have had a muscle injury or heart attack; CK values can peak up to two days after a particular injury and may need to be tested multiple times. This test can help indicate whether the injury is to the heart or to another muscle.

What happens during the CK test?

The doctor will take blood from a vein in your arm with a small needle. After the needle is inserted, a small amount of blood is collected in a test tube or vial. You will feel some pressure as the needle goes in and out. This usually takes less than 5 minutes.

Do I need to prepare for the test?

No special preparation for the CK test is required.

Was there any danger in the test?

There are no sufficient risks associated with blood tests. The area where the needle is inserted can be slightly sore and bruised, but most signs disappear quickly.

What do the results mean?

A higher than normal CK result may mean that you have a muscle, heart, or brain injury or disease. To obtain more information, your doctor can order a test to find out your specific CK enzyme levels.

  • If it is higher than the normal CK-MM enzyme, this may mean that there is muscle damage or a disease such as muscular dystrophy or rhabdomyolysis.
  • If the normal CK-MB enzyme is high, this may mean that there is inflammation of the heart muscle or that you have had or recently had a heart attack.
  • If higher than normal CK-BB enzyme, this may mean that you have had a heart attack or brain injury.

Other situations that are likely to result in higher than normal CK levels include

  • Blood clots
  • Infection
  • Hormonal disorders, including thyroid and adrenal disorders
  • Long-term surgery
  • Certain medications
  • Physical activity

If you have questions about your results, talk to your own health care provider.

What else should I know about the CK test?

Other blood tests, such as electrolyte pathway tests and active renal function tests, can be performed in conjunction with the CK test.
