A blood smear is a blood sample spread on a glass slide treated with a special staining agent. Previously, all blood smears were examined under a microscope by laboratory staff. Today, automated digital systems are often used for blood smear examination.
The purpose of the blood smear examination is to determine the size, shape, and number of the following three types of blood cells
- Red blood cells, which carry air from the bulky body to the rest of the body.
- White blood cells fight infection.
- Platelets help the blood to clot.
Also known as: peripheral blood smear, peripheral blood film, smear, blood film, manual differential, slide differential, blood cell morphology, blood smear test

Das ist ein Resultaten?
Usually, blood test results alone are not likely to diagnose a disease. Your physician will combine your results with disease status, signs, and other test results to make a diagnosis.
Blood smear results usually show the appearance and the number of red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. The results will reveal any abnormalities in your blood.
If the red blood cell results are not considered normal, the following symptoms may be present
- Brudermode
- Sickle cell anemia.
- Hemolytic anemia. A type of anemia in which the body breaks down red blood cells faster than they can be replaced.
- Thalassemia.
- Bone marrow disease
- Liver disease.
- Cancer that has spread to the bones
If your white blood cell results are not considered normal, you may have the following conditions
- Infection or inflammation
- Allergies
- Leukemia
- Bone marrow disease
A platelet result that is not considered normal is more likely a sign of
- Thrombocytopenia, a condition in which the blood does not contain the required number of platelets, actually increasing the risk of bleeding
- Hereditary platelet abnormalities (rare), such as Bernard-Soulier syndrome.
Extreme bed-ridden, stressed, or experiencing blood transfusions may result in a different composition and number of blood cells. Therefore, a blood smear may not provide sufficient information for the physician to make a diagnosis. If the blood smear results are not normal, the physician may order further testing. Contact your ISP for more information about your results.
Is there anything else I should know about blood smears?
Blood smears can be used to detect certain types of parasites in the blood that cause the following diseases
- Malaria is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito.
- Babesiosis is spread primarily by the bite of an infected tick.
- Chagas disease is spread by the bite of a “cow turtles” (cow tortoises).
If you live or travel in an area that may be infected and showing symptoms, your doctor may order testing. Symptoms vary depending on the parasite. These symptoms may include fever, fatigue, body aches, rashes, and digestive problems.
