Myelography

Myelography, also called myelogram, is an imaging analysis that examines problems in the spine. The spine contains the spinal cord, nerve roots, and the location of the subarachnoid space. The subarachnoid space is the fluid-filled area between the spinal cord and the fleece covering the spinal cord. Contrast fluid is injected into the spine during the examination. Contrast fluid is a substance that ensures that certain organs, blood vessels, and tissues can be seen more clearly on X-rays.

Myelography includes one of these two imaging procedures.

  • Fluoroscopy, an x-ray image showing internal tissues, structures, and organs moving in real time.
  • Computed tomography (CT), a procedure that combines a series of X-rays taken from different angles of the body.

Other Name: Myelogram

What is it used for?

Myelography is used to look for disorders and diseases affecting the nerves, blood vessels, and structures of the spine. These include

  • Hernias of the spine. wervel disc is a rubber cushion (disc) between the bones of the spine. kila kila is the position where the disc presses downward on the spinal nerve or cord.
  • Tumor.
  • A position that causes swelling and damage to the bones and tissues around the spine and spinal cord. This leads to narrowing of the spinal cord.
  • Infections, such as meningitis, can affect the membranes and tissues of the spinal cord.
  • Arachnoiditis, a condition that causes inflammation from the membranes lining the spinal cord.

Why do I need myelography ?

For example, if there are signs of a backbone condition, there are options that require this analysis

  • Pain in the back, neck, or legs
  • A prickly feeling
  • Weakness
  • Problems with walking
  • Problems with tasks involving small muscle groups, such as shirt buttoning

What happens during myelography ?

A myelography Can be performed in the radiology department of a radiology center or outpatient clinic. The procedure usually involves the correct steps.

  • It may be necessary to remove clothing. In this case, a hospital jacket can be obtained.
  • Lie on your stomach on a flexible x-ray table.
  • Your doctor will clean your back with disinfectant.
  • For example, narcotics are injected so that you will not feel pain during the procedure.
  • Once this area is petrified, your doctor will use a delicate needle to inject contrast fluid into the spine. When the needle is injected, you will feel some pressure, but this is not intrusive.
  • Your physician can send you a sample of spinal fluid (cerebrospinal fluid) for study.
  • The X-Ray table is tilted in different directions to move the contrast fluid to different parts of the spinal cord.
  • Your doctor removes the needle.
  • Your physician records and documents the images using a fluoroscopy or CT scan.

After the examination, you will be checked for one to two hours. It is still recommended to stay home for a few hours and avoid strenuous activities during the day or two of the examination.

Do I need to prepare for the test?

Your doctor may ask you to drink extra water the day before the test. On the day of the test, you will probably be asked to eat and drink nothing but clear liquids. These include water, colorless soup, tea, and dark coffee.

Talk to your own health care provider about all medications you will be using. Certain medications, especially aspirin and blood thinners, should only be taken after a checkup. Your physician will tell you how long you should avoid these medications. This can be up to 72 hours before the test.

Was there any risk to your test?

If you are pregnant or think you are, you do not need to do this test. Radiation can be harmful to the fetus.

For others, there is not enough risk in this test. Radiation doses are very low and are not harmful to most people. However, you should talk to your Internet provider about any X-rays you have had in the past. The risk of radiation exposure may be related to the number of x-ray procedures you have had over time.

There is a small risk of allergic reactions to contrast media. Tell your supplier if you are allergic to shellfish or iodine in particular, or if you have ever had a reaction to contrast fluid.

Other risks are headache, nausea, and vomiting. Headache can last up to 24 hours. Non-nonsense reactions are rare, but can include, among others, epileptic seizures, infection, and spinal blockage.

What do the results mean?

If the result is not normal, this may mean that there is one of the correct criteria

  • Hernia
  • Stenosis of the spine.
  • Tumor
  • Nerve trauma
  • Traces of
  • Arachnoiditis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the spinal cord).

A normal result means that the spine and structures were normal in terms of volume, position, and shape. Your doctor may want to do more tests to find the cause of your complaint.

If you have questions about the results, talk to your own doctor.

Is there really something else I should be concerned about? myelography ?

MRI has replaced MRI as the need for myelography In many cases. an MRI uses a magnetic background and radio waves to produce images of organs and structures in the body. But myelography MRI may be more necessary in the diagnosis of some disorders, such as certain tumors and spinal problems in the spine. It is also used for people who cannot produce MRI scans because they have iron or electrical appliances in their bodies. These are, for example, pacemakers, surgical screws, co cattle implants.
