A normal result means that there is no substantial abnormality in the volume, shape, or movement of one part of the throat, digestive tract, stomach, or small intestine.

If the result is not normal, it may mean you have one of the correct criteria:

  • Swear.
  • Tumors
  • Polyps
  • Diverticulum, a condition in which small pouches form in the inner wall of the intestine
  • Narrowing of the esophagus, which may make it difficult to pass food to swallow

If you have questions about your results, talk to your own health care provider.

Is there really anything else I should know? a barium swallow ?

Your results most likely indicate symptoms of cancer of the digestive tract. If your doctor believes you have this type of cancer, he or she can perform a function called an esophagoscopy. During esophagoscopy, a slim elastic tube is inserted into the digestive tract through the alimentary canal or mouth. The tube contains a camera so the caregiver can view the area. Another device can be attached to the tube that allows tissue samples to be taken for study (biopsy).
