General.

The most common side effects were gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, vomiting, anorexia) and allergic skin reactions (skin rash, ur measles, etc.).

Effects associated with Jirovecii pneumonia included slow hypersensitivity reactions, skin rash, pyrexia, neutropenia, thrombocytopenia, increased liver enzymes, hyponatremia, and those foliar. These effects were very rare.

Exceptions included Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrosis, liver necrosis, agranulocytosis, demodicosis, and other hematogenous isolates, which were fatal victims of sulfonamide use as a result of slow reactions.

Nervous System

When this product was stopped, aseptic meningitis was immediately reversible, but in various cases a repeat occurred after repeated exposure to this combination product or trimethoprim only.

Tremor and other neurological symptoms (ataxia, ankle clones, indifference, etc.) that took place during treatment with this product in a variety of AIDS patients. However, these effects were still associated with the main tendencies of the disease, and these symptoms disappeared within 2 to 3 days after stopping this product. [Ref].

SMZ-TMP DS (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) is a combination antibiotic used to treat ear infections, urinary tract infections, bronchitis, traveler’s diarrhea, bacterial bacteremia, and pneumocystis pneumonia.

Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim may continue to be used for purposes not listed in this drug guide.

Important Information.

SMZ-TMP DS should not be used if you have severe liver disease, poorly controlled renal disease, anemia due to folate deficiency, are taking dofetilide, or have platelet depletion due to treatment with trimethoprim or sulfapol products. Pregnancy or Lactation.

You do not need to take SMZ-TMP DS if you are pregnant or nursing.

Before taking this drink.

You should not use this medication if you are allergic to sulfamethoxazole or trimethoprim, or if you have

Severe liver disease; or

  • kidney disease that is not treated or controlled; and
  • anemia (low red blood cell count) caused by a deficiency of folic acid; and
  • A history of low blood platelets after taking trimethoprim or sulfamycin. OR
  • Dofetilide (Tikosyn) if understood.
  • Do not use if pregnant. Use effective contraception and tell your own doctor if you become pregnant.

Do not breastfeed while using this medication.

This medicine may not be given to babies under 2 months.

Tell your doctor if you ever have:

Kidney or liver disease; or

  • folic acid deficiency (folate); and
  • Asthma or Allergies;.
  • Thyroid disease; and
  • HIV or AIDS; HIV/AIDS
  • Deficiency;.
  • Alcoholism;.
  • High potassium content in the blood.
  • Porphyria, or glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency; or
  • Blood thinners (e.g., warfarin) and routine “INR” or prothrombin, if used, short term testing.
  • How should SMZ-TMP DS be managed?

SMZ-TMP DS is taken orally.

Follow all instructions on the label of your own recipe and read all medication instructions or package leaflets. Use the medication literally as prescribed.

Drink enough to prevent kidney stones while using this medication.

Dosages of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are based on the child’s weight. Only use the correct dosage when you give this medication to your child.

Use this medication at the prescribed time, even if your symptoms improve quickly. Losing the dose may increase the risk of infection that is resistant to the drug. This medication does not treat viral infections such as flu or colds.

Routine physical examinations may be required.

This medication may affect the results of certain physical examinations. Tell all treating physicians that you are using sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim.

Store at room temperature, away from moisture, warmth, and light.

What happens if I overdo the dosage?

Use the medication as soon as possible, but skip the missed dose in case it is time for the correct dose. Do not use two doses at the same time.

Symptoms of overdose include loss of appetite, vomiting, fever, blood in the mouth, turning yellow from the skin or eyes, loss of consciousness or unconsciousness.

What should I ignore if I take SMZ-TMP DS?

The medication may cause diarrhea, which can be a symptom of a new infection. If you have liquid or bloody diarrhea, contact your physician before taking any medication for diarrhea.
